Inside the Whitney’s Pop Party

October 28, 2026  ·  Whitney Museum of American Art

A photo and video report from the October 28 Halloween Member Night, where museum membership opened the door to an evening of Pop art and costumes.

The Whitney’s Halloween Member Night: Pop Party brought costumes into the galleries on October 28. Museum membership included admission to the evening, giving members an after-hours visit with a party unfolding around the art. The Circuit Report’s photographs and short films move from the museum’s illuminated exterior to the Lichtenstein galleries and the gathering downstairs.

Pop was an easy theme to carry through the building. A blue wig and a speech-bubble prop turned a guest portrait into a small performance; bold paintings supplied their own backdrops. In the lobby, purple light changed the mood again, with costumed guests gathering beneath the museum’s high ceiling.

Lichtenstein after hours

The Whitney’s official event listing placed Roy Lichtenstein: Like New at the center of the celebration and opened the night to all members. The program also offered gallery mini-tours, art-making and live music. Our album follows the parts of the evening caught on camera: looking at paintings, stopping for portraits and returning to the party.

The gallery footage gives the evening a different pace from the lobby scenes. Visitors have room to stand back from the work, while the photographs keep the scale of the paintings and the people sharing the space in view. A bright cupcake beside a Like New napkin carries the exhibition’s graphic energy into one of the night’s smallest details.

A membership evening at the museum

This was a members’ event, with admission available through Whitney membership. For anyone considering membership, the night shows one of its social pleasures: spending time with the collection and exhibitions beyond an ordinary daytime visit, with friends, costumes and a reason to linger.
