A performer’s civic project

Bette Midler founded New York Restoration Project in 1995. The singer and actor’s work with the nonprofit grew from concern for neglected parks and green spaces in New York City. The organization has developed into a citywide nature conservancy and environmental justice nonprofit, caring for community gardens and other places where neighborhoods can gather.

Beyond a single evening

Midler remains central to NYRP’s fundraising and donor relationships. Hulaween, its annual costume benefit, connects a theatrical occasion with the continuing care of gardens, parks and community spaces. The important work extends across the year through staff, gardeners, volunteers and local partners.

Hulaween in our coverage

Our 2026 Hulaween story follows the Horror Reef theme alongside the organization’s green-space mission and the October 23 benefit. The event is a route into learning about the cause, while NYRP’s own reporting provides the longer view of its projects. Follow the stories below for the specific occasions in which Midler appears in our reporting, with historical editions preserved as such.
