A ball with seven decades of history

The Mayflower Society of New York was founded in New York City on December 22, 1894, by Richard Henry Greene. It was the first Society of Mayflower Descendants; the General Society followed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1897. The society’s first Mayflower Ball was held at the Plaza Hotel in 1953, when six debutantes were presented. In 1970 the ball marked the 350th anniversary of the Mayflower Compact, and in 2003 the Golden Annual Mayflower Ball moved to the University Club, which remains the setting this year.

The 72nd edition

The 72nd Annual Mayflower Ball takes place on Saturday, November 7, 6–11 p.m., at the University Club, 1 West 54th Street. The society describes the debutante ball as its major annual fundraiser, held on the first weekend of November. Proceeds support the society’s educational outreach, which works with teachers and students on American history.

The society

The society is a nonprofit lineage organization for descendants of passengers on the 1620 Mayflower voyage to Plymouth. Its charter commits it to educating Americans about “the great heritage of liberty and law exemplified by the founders of our country.” Beyond the ball, its calendar includes a March Cousins dinner, a June summer solstice party with other genealogical societies and a September fall reception.
