Three instruments can offer a substantial change of pace from the autumn party calendar. On Saturday, November 7, Guild Hall brings Kaoru Watanabe, Kinan Azmeh and Maeve Gilchrist to East Hampton for Silkroad Up Close, a concert shaped around the meeting of distinct musical traditions.

The performance runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Guild Hall, 158 Main Street. The announced trio brings Japanese musical traditions, Syrian-rooted clarinet playing and Celtic harp into a shared program. Rather than making each tradition a separate stop, the collaboration asks what happens when the musicians listen and respond to one another.

Three artists in conversation

Clarinetist and composer Kinan Azmeh comes from Damascus and works across composition and improvisation. Kaoru Watanabe brings a practice grounded in Japanese music alongside jazz and experimental work. Harpist and composer Maeve Gilchrist approaches the Celtic harp through improvisation, texture and collaboration.

Those different starting points give the evening its interest. A small ensemble leaves room to hear an individual line and then follow how another player changes its direction. For listeners, it is an opportunity to pay attention to the exchange itself: rhythm, tone and the choices a musician makes in response to someone else.

Silkroad builds its work around collaboration across musical backgrounds. This trio gives that idea an intimate setting, with three individual voices carrying the program. It is an appealing reason to make a November evening in East Hampton about the performance rather than a series of stops.

Plan the visit

Use Guild Hall’s concert page for the current ticket route and program. Reserved-seat pricing and availability should be checked there before making the trip.

Guild Hall also describes a limited in-person rush policy: $25 tickets may be released 20 minutes before a Guild Hall-produced program, subject to availability. For this concert that would be around 6:40 p.m. A potential rush release is a separate option from a reserved seat and cannot be counted on as confirmed admission.

The concert is the occasion here; the promotional photograph shows Azmeh performing and is credited to photographer Justin Mohling. It is not a photograph of the forthcoming November 7 evening.
