Aperture Gala 2026 Honors Deana Lawson and Hiroshi Sugimoto
Two approaches to photography meet at the American Museum of Natural History on November 5, in a benefit for Aperture’s publications and programs.

Aperture’s November 5 gala brings Deana Lawson and Hiroshi Sugimoto to the American Museum of Natural History as honorees. The benefit begins at 6:30 p.m. and supports the nonprofit publisher’s photography books, magazine and public programming.
The pairing gives the evening its artistic focus. Deana Lawson constructs portraits in which setting, pose and objects carry as much weight as the sitter. Her connection to Aperture includes a 2018 monograph and guest editing its Fall 2024 issue. Hiroshi Sugimoto has pursued time and perception through photographic series including Seascapes and Theaters. This venue has a particular place in his work: his Dioramas series began with the museum’s habitat displays.
A benefit for photography in print and in public
Aperture describes the gala as its largest annual fundraising occasion. The cause reaches beyond one exhibition: support sustains the editorial and public work that brings photographs into circulation and conversation. The museum setting connects that publishing mission with a place Sugimoto has photographed since the 1970s.
